The Volunteer’s Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced horticulture professional to contribute to a regional nutrition project led by CARE Canada! The Southern Africa Nutrition Initiative (SANI) is working to improve the nutrition of women of reproductive age and children under five years old in Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia.

As Horticulture Advisor, you bring strong technical expertise to the SANI team in Zambia, working with colleagues to ensure that SANI builds local capacity to support the implementation and sustainability of Kitchen Gardens to improve nutrition in target communities. Reviews of evidence from Africa and Asia suggest that interventions targeting home gardening can significantly improve diet diversity, strengthen interaction within communities, improve health as well as significantly reduce food insecurity.

You bring to this role a solid technical background in horticulture and organic farming as well as experience and flexibility in understanding and adapting programming to different cultural beliefs, social norms and local food habits. You will work with the SANI project team to develop a KG strategy and develop interventions to support and monitor the success of this component of the project.

As a volunteer, you will:

  • Assess and advise on the technical inputs required to support implementation

  • Document and share best practices with team and partners

-Facilitate capacity building for project staff and key stakeholders

-Lead in development of SANI Zambia KG strategy

-Support staff to conduct situational analysis to identify current local practices, and opportunities for KG’s and diversified gardens

Essential Academic Qualifications:

  • Degree/certificate in Horticultor, Agriculture, Permaculture

Essential Professional Background:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in horticulture or Agriculture work, particularly in growing food for consumption and setting up Kitchen Gardens

  • Experience implementing behaviour change and health promotion methods linked to horticulture activities

Support Package

  • Modest monthly living allowance (varies depending country)

  • Cost of required vaccinations, antimalarial medication and health insurance

  • Pre-departure training and in-country orientation

  • Travel and accommodation for reintegration debriefing weekend

  • Access to Employee Assistance Program while in placement and upon return

  • Cuso International assessment day (Candidates must cover the first $200 of the most cost-effective travel expenses and all accommodation costs).

  • Travel and accommodation for the five-day pre-departure training course and for in-country orientation

  • Bonus: Additional return flight home or cash in lieu after 12 months of service for volunteers who extend for another 6 months
